The Building Safety Act and its impact on both projects and construction contracts will be under consideration for the JCT Povey Webinar 2022.

Gary Neal, head of fire, Skanska UK will be delivering a presentation covering the key aspects of the Act, focusing in particular on the practical implications of the legislation on construction projects. This will be essential viewing for construction professionals looking for practical steps to ensure compliance.

Following the main presentation, Gary will join a panel for further discussion and audience questions, led by JCT chair, Karen Kirkham and featuring Amanda Long, chief executive, Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), Building a Safer Future (BSF), and the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

Karen Kirkham is a construction lawyer at BDB Pitmans LLP. She has 30 years’ experience working with JCT contracts, advising clients from all sectors of the industry. Her clients include commercial developers, occupiers, charities, local authorities, public infrastructure companies, contractors, sub-contractors, architects, and individual householders. Karen has been listed as a leading construction legal practitioner in Chambers since 2008 and regularly publishes articles on topical construction issues.

Karen’s involvement and interest in JCT goes back a long way. She is a former legal director of the Construction Confederation during a key period for the industry when major legislation, including the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 and Arbitration Act 1996, was being passed.

Gary Neal is head of fire at Skanska UK. With almost 45 years’ experience under his belt, including 35 years working in fire safety, Gary is Skanska UK’s go-to fire expert.

With a broad career spanning work in the rail sector, both above and below ground, as well as significant building projects, Gary has put continuous learning at the heart of his approach, gaining an honours degree in Construction Site fire safety and collaborating with the London Fire Brigade and Government regulators, to remain at the forefront of evolving practice and legislation. Gary’s focus is on the management controls and safety measures needed to prevent risk of fire. He leads knowledge-sharing to ensure best practice in every part of the organisation’s approach – from design to procurement and delivery of fully compliant solutions. Put simply, he drives Skanska’s quality management when it comes to fire safety.

Amanda Long is chief executive of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, the Building a Safer Future Charter and Construction Product Information Ltd. She has over 25 years’ experience working in senior executive roles for a range of national and international organisations in the commercial, public, social enterprise and charitable sectors.

Amanda brings a wealth of expertise driving ethical business practice and championing consumer protection. She has been responsible for developing ground-breaking Corporate Social Responsibility frameworks to improve standards and in helping organisations with behavioural and culture change programmes focusing on public engagement, sustainability, workforce welfare and consumer protection. Her previous roles include director-general of Consumers International, CEO of Corporate Culture, head of corporate responsibility at Anglian Water Services, and international projects manager (sustainability) at Unilever.

EVENT SCHEDULE

We will be live streaming a rolling animation 20 minutes before the lecture begins so viewers can check their audio and video are working correctly. Every effort will be made to start the lecture promptly at 4.00pm.

Can I physically attend the event as I normally do?

Unfortunately not. Due to COVID restrictions the lecture will be solely delivered over a live stream from our partner company’s East London studios.

Why is the event a live stream?

We hope that doing it by live stream opens the event up to viewers that wouldn’t normally be able to attend the physical event due to geography and their work location.

Will I receive an email confirming my registration?

Yes, once you have registered, you will receive confirmation that your place has been secured, plus other information about the event such as the live stream URL and testing instructions.

How can I ask questions for the Q&A session?

There will be a text interface under the video stream in which you can ask questions at any point during the main lecture.

Do I need to set a password ?

No, you don’t. Once you have registered, you’ll be sent an email containing the website URL to click and access on the day of the lecture.

Can I test my device/connection before the day of the event?

Yes, you can and we strongly recommend this for ALL users. There will be very limited technical assistance available on the day of the event. Two weeks before the live broadcast, we will send out a test link to all register users and will provide technical assistance to resolve any issues with viewing the test video.

What link do I need to see the live stream on the day?

The weblink will be in the email sent to all registered viewers. You will be able to access the live stream over phone, tablet and desktop devices without having to download any additional software or apps.
